Young entrepreneur gearing up for another summer of Sweet Scoops

Last spring, you probably noticed the colourful addition to the Chambers Street shopping district. Not only is it hard to miss, but it’s a much needed addition to our downtown core’s assortment of businesses and stores.

Sweet Scoops is an ice cream shop located at 1 Chambers St., and they’re currently getting ready to open up for a second season. The store’s opening date is set for the May long weekend (May 16-19) and they’re extremely excited for the people of Smiths Falls to see all of the additions to their menu!

So, who’s behind the delicious flavours available at Smiths Falls’ only local ice cream store? You might be surprised.

Morgan Devries, 19, is a student at Algonquin College, studying business administration and marketing. With one year remaining in her program, she found that opening a seasonal shop in such a vibrant community to be a very smart idea, not only for now, but for the future.

“I’m in school for business, so it’s kind of up my alley,” said Devries. “It’s very interesting now, owning it. I knew it would be a lot of work, but I didn’t realize how much work it is. It’s just me and my dad, so it’s hard.”

Devries and her family have been living in Smiths Falls for around 5 years. They lived in Westport prior to that as well as in Western Canada, but ultimately decided to stay in Smiths Falls for the business opportunities available to them in the town.

Morgan is the co-owner of the business, along with her parents. Her parents thought the idea of a running a small business would give her additional practical experience for when she’s finished her college program.

“My parents are very invested into real estate,” she said. “They have a vending machine business. My parents had this idea [for Sweet Scoops] and they wanted to do it in Westport because it’s so touristy. But one year after college, they said we should do this in Smiths Falls, and it just went from there.”

Morgan does all of the marketing for and running of the business by herself.

As for the people of Smiths Falls – they’re loving it. The store was busy last summer, and hope to be even busier this time around. The feedback Morgan has been getting is exceptional.

“It was surprisingly busy,” Morgan said of last summer. “People are really excited about having an ice cream shop open. I was very pleased and happy with the response of the town and I’m even more excited to see the excitement this year because it’s going to be expanding and exciting things are going to be happening.”

The exciting things she is referring to are the many new plans they have for the summer. They currently have 16 flavours of hard-scoop ice cream at the store, but they’re looking into getting another ice cream freezer so they can add even more flavours.

They will also continue with their milkshakes and sundaes from last year, but they’ve also got a few new ideas up their sleeves.

This year, they’re going to be adding frozen lemonades, smoothies and iced coffees to their menu.

The store will be open from the May long weekend until the end of August, at which point they’ll be open on weekends only until October when they will close for the winter.

This will be Morgan’s last summer running the business.

“I’m handing it off to my little brother,” she said. “This will be my last year running the ice cream shop, unfortunately, but I’d like to get into something in marketing.”
