The hidden world of the Smiths Falls Arts and Culture scene

culture-and-arts1

Smiths Falls hosts a variety of organized sports, and recreational clubs, but did you know there’s also a lively arts and culture community thriving beneath the surface? If you’re in the mood for something creative and outside-the-box, there are plenty of options available for the public to become involved in.

Not only do arts and culture exist in Smiths Falls, the scene is actually booming. We’re home to theatre programs, photography experts, world-class ethnic cuisine, along with our museums and heritage homes. It’s all just happening behind the scenes.

That’s where we come in. We want to provide appropriate exposure to these types of cultural programs, events and exhibits that wouldn’t otherwise have a platform on which to shine. We want the Smiths Falls arts and culture scene to sparkle in the way it deserves.  So, we’ve compiled a (short) list of just some of the ways Smiths Falls arts scene is blossoming.

Here’s why:

1-      The Station Theatre: Held in the former CPR Railway Station, this community theatre produces multiple plays throughout the year and relies on the overall involvement of our community to be sustainable. http://smithsfallstheatre.com/

2-     Smiths Falls Centre of Photographic Excellence

3-     Farmer’s Markets – the benefits of farmer’s markets are plentiful, but especially when it comes to small communities. This is our opportunity to buy fresh, real, healthy food from our neighbours and truly support local business. You may not realize it, but this is a definite form of art and culture, and it promotes a true sense of community.

4-     Museums – visitors and residents alike can enjoy an afternoon at one of Smiths Falls’ museums. We have the Heritage House Museum, the Rideau Canal Visitor Information Centre (which is the flagship centre for the entire Rideau Canal waterway), and the acclaimed Railway Museum. All of these locations showcase integral parts of our heritage in Smiths Falls. Make a day of it. You’ll walk away feeling a deeper connection to and appreciation for our town.

5-     Smiths Falls Arts and Culture Council – Smiths Falls & District Arts & Culture Council is a non-profit organization founded to support and promote local arts and culture.
