Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, The Musical romps into Studio Theatre
Workin’ nine to five, what a way to make a livin’,
Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’.
They just use your mind, and they never give you credit,
It’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it!
Who can believe it’s been 36 years since those words and that music burst onto North American movie screens? And who didn’t get swept up in the story of three friends who go to war with their chauvinistic, dim-witted boss? The movie struck a chord with everyone who saw it.
On June 2nd, the Broadway musical version of 9 to 5 will strike a chord all over again, right here in Perth.
“I’m crazy-thrilled about being able to bring 9 To 5: The Musical to Perth!” says C. Lee Bates, the gifted director who has perennially capped off the Studio Theatre’s season of plays with musicals like Little Women: The Musical and The Drowsy Chaperone.
“The Broadway show was written by Patricia Resnick — who also wrote the movie — and of course the music is by the great Dolly Parton,” says C. Lee. “There are rhythmic and key changes in almost every song, with musical styles from Country and Pop to Gospel and Funk. If you loved the movie, you’ll be wild about the musical!”
When 9 To 5: The Musical opened on Broadway it received a record 15 Drama Desk and four Tony Award nominations. While it’s very much a light-hearted comedy, the subtext of gender inequality is still relevant today. Like the movie, it uses humour and satire to make a powerful social message palatable, but still hard-hitting.
With 17 cast members and a full 10-piece orchestra, C. Lee Bates says this show is one of the most ambitious ever mounted by Studio Theatre Productions.
“We have four leads, two featured performers, and an 11-member ensemble, all incredibly talented and experienced musical theatre performers. And what’s a musical without great music? We’re thrilled to have an orchestra of 10 professional musicians, assembled by Mark Bailey and led by Conductor Alexandra Guerin.”
Other production credits go to Jane Stott, Producer; Leah Williams, Vocal Director; and Choreographer/performer Courtney Mason. The set is designed by C. Lee Bates and Reiner Silberhorn, and brought to life by a gifted team of builders, painters and scenic designers.
Don’t miss this super-energized, terrifically entertaining show when it premieres at the Studio Theatre, 63 Gore Street East, on Thursday, June 2nd for eight performances only. Advance tickets are $25 (cash) at The Book Nook, 60 Gore St. E., and at Tickets Please (ticketsplease.ca) and Shadowfax (shadowfax.on.ca) both of which accept credit cards and charge a convenience fee. Tickets are $27 at the door; students with ID pay just $10 at the door. Attend opening night and save $5! Visit studiotheatreperth.com for details.

Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde one of several spring shows at Station Theatre
The spring season at the Station Theatre offers something for everybody.
A thrilling play: Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde
Beginning on April 8 there’s a new drama by Jeffrey Hatcher (the screen writer of the hit movie Mr. Holmes) described as “a new and shocking version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of depravity, lust, love and horror.” This modern treatment of a well-known tale runs from Friday, April 8 until Sunday, April 17.
In this theatrical presentation, Director Stephen McWade seeks to give Station Theatre audiences a taste of a newer style of theatre — a modern, expressionist piece that plays with the duality of human nature in a way that will keep audiences guessing. He promises a fast-paced drama with staging that employs dramatic lighting and a cast of six, four actors playing multiple roles. Stephen brings over three decades of theatre acting, voice-acting, public speaking, radio, television and film to bear on his directorial debut here in Smiths Falls. Although not new to the medium, having directed in theatre, radio and film, this is his first foray locally.
Four men and two women make up the cast. Richard Croteau, who starred most recently in The Fox on the Fairway, plays the part of Dr. Henry Jeykll; Todd Daniluk, who most recently played a major role in The Railway Children, is Edward Hyde. Hyde #2 is portrayed by Brant Daniluk, Hyde #3 by Sam Saikeley, and Heather Mitchell-Adams plays Hyde #4. Emily Starks rounds out the players in the role of Elizabeth Jelkes, the unlikely love interest of Hyde, who cannot resist his attraction to her.
Evening performances of the play take place on April 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees are on April 10 and 17 at 2.00 p.m.. Adults $20; Students (with ID) $10. Group rates (at $15) are available for some performances. Call 613-283-0300 for ticket details (and for credit card purchases) or go to our website at www.smithsfallstheatre.com. Cash only tickets sales are at Special Greetings, 8 Russell St. E. in Smiths Falls and at the door one-half hour before each performance. The Station Theatre is located at 53 Victoria Avenue, the site of the former CPR Railway Station.
Smiths Falls Library’s Film Night International presents two outstanding films
Brooklyn, Thursday April 7 at 7 p.m.: Lured by the promise of America, a young Irish woman leaves her homeland for New York in the early ’50s. A tender love story, nominated for Best Picture at the 2016 Academy Awards; Rated PG.
Room, Thursday April 21 at 7 p.m.: A kidnapped mother and five-year-old son escape from a room in which they have endured imprisonment for the entirety of her son’s life. Upon breaking free, they experience a dramatic homecoming, provoking insight into the depths of imagination and the extent of a mother’s love. Starring Brie Larson, winner of the Academy Awards Best Actress category; Rated PG.
Tickets ($10) for the movies go on sale for non-season ticket holders at 6.40 p.m. as available.
Station Theatre’s Weekend Movie Nights screens Award-winning Spotlight
The riveting, true story of the Boston Globe’s investigation that rocked the city with its expose of the clergy’s cover-up of child abuse comes to the screen of the Station Theatre on April 22 and 23.
Winner of the 2016 Academy Award’s Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay categories, Spotlight has been described by the New York Times as “a gripping detective story and a superlative newsroom drama.” The movie, directed by Tom McCarthy, offers an all-star cast in a wonderful display of ensemble acting: Mark Ruffalo, Rachel Adams, Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber and John Slattery.
Tickets, sold only at the door for cash, are $10, $5 for students. Time: 7:30 p.m. Rated-14A.
Séan McCann Sings – Friday, May 13 at 8 PM
Séan McCann, a founding member of the internationally renowned band Great Big Sea, has enamoured audiences from Copenhagen to California. Today his mantra “Help Your Self” sees him breaking the silence on his past addiction and abuse, using music as medicine to positively change lives.
Séan will bring his stories and songs in a one-man performance on the stage of the spectacular Smiths Falls Station Theatre on May 13 at 8 p.m. Go to the theatre’s website, www.smithsfallstheatre.com for full details on the artist and the event and an opportunity to hear a download of his latest music.
Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online at www.smithsfallstheatre.com or by calling 613-283-0300. Cash-only tickets sales are at Special Greetings, 8 Russell St. E. in Smiths Falls and at the door one-half hour before the performance.

Madcap farce opens Station Theatre’s 2016 season
Submitted by the Smiths Falls Community Theatre
A hilarious romp in true farce tradition, The Fox on the Fairway is the lead-off play for the Smiths Falls Community Theatre’s 2016 Play Season. Liaisons, cheating, ridiculous wagers, expensive gifts, sneaking around, champagne, dreams, taking risks, winning at all costs. If you’re thinking this is about love, you’d be wrong. It’s about golf.
Presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., Fox is written by Ken Ludwig, the same talented playwright who crafted last year’s run-away hit, Leading Ladies. This year’s offering, also directed by Jamie Schoular, is a tribute to the great English farces of the 1930s and ’40s. It runs from Feb. 19 to Feb. 28. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and can be purchased at Special Greetings, 8 Russell Street East, at smithsfallstheatre.com, and by phone at 613-283-0300. Matinees start at 2 p.m. and evening performances at 7.30.
Ludwig’s comedic masterpiece is built around the desperation of Quail Valley Country Club needing to win this year’s golf tournament and beat their rival, Crouching Squirrel Country Club, especially as the Quail Valley’s manager, Bingham played by Robert Del Grande, finds his job is at stake. He believes he’s got it “in the hole” this year, but arch-rival Dickie, played by Richard Croteau, has something up his outrageous sweater sleeve.
“Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans; it’s a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics. A charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man’s eternal love affair with golf,” Ludwig says.
Patrons are advised to watch for news of other plays in the 2016 Season on our website, smithsfallstheatre.com. Over the rest of the year, audiences will be treated to a delightful mix of comedies and mysteries, capped off in December by another rib-tickling British pantomime. There will be six plays this year’s season.
Patrons can still purchase a season ticket in voucher form for the six plays to be presented in 2016. The theatre is offering a “Six-Pack Flex Pack” for $99. Playgoers can select how they want to use their six vouchers to redeem tickets for any of the 2016 plays. The deal, which is good up to Feb. 28, the last day of The Fox on the Fairway – offers savings of almost 20 per cent compared to the regular adult ticket price. Go to smithsfallstheatre.com for detailed ordering instructions and information on the different ways the “Six-Pack ” can be used throughout the 2016 season. One way to get vouchers without paying the $5 convenience fee for purchase online or by phone is to buy vouchers at a performance of Fox any time from February 19 to 28. When you use your voucher tickets for the February play and save on your theatre going over the rest of the year.
We invite everyone to keep in touch with all our up-coming movies— like Suffragette, the stirring story of a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she secretly joins Emmeline Pankhurst’s growing suffragette movement in Britain. The movie will be screened Feb. 12 & 13 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Go to our website for details.
