Rideau Roundtable Friends announce race results from Rideau Paddlefest 2015

What a great race day!!!

We had 8 racing teams this year, with people coming from Ottawa, Montreal, Brockville, Gananoque and Smiths Falls. There was a 200m race ladder in the morning and 500m race ladder in the afternoon.

Team “Paddle Fish” reprised its 2014 victory, taking the honours in very close matches in both the 200m and the 500m race finals and taking home an engraved paddle for each event.

Everyone had a great time at our second race event and many of our teams included children and families. We had paddlers as young as eight years and others in their 70s and 80s.

The VIP team included 30 paddlers including politicians from three levels of governments, businesses leaders, service club presidents, community and faith leaders, arts, social, health and environmental organizations, and federal government departments. (See below for list of members)

Parks Canada, the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Cataraqui Conservation Authority, the Community Support Group, Karsen Foto and Rideau Roundtable hosted booths and demonstrations. The Ottawa University Outdoors Club provided demonstrations of stand-up paddle boards and kayaks, and Alistair Baird provided voyageur canoes rides all day for the public. Vendor included the folks from 1000 Islands Kayaking and Perth Outfitters showed how they promoted healthy outdoor activities in their communities. “Funtasy” children’s activities such as face painting and kids jewellery were a big hit with the young folk.

This year’s event also featured one of Canada’s top 100 modern day explorers, canoeing icon Max Finkelstein. Max and Liz Elton spent a lot of time training the racers in the run-up to the big day and, along with Shirley Walsh and Andrea Howard acted as volunteer “gouvernails” for all of the teams. Opportunities to paddle with such exceptional paddlers don’t come by often. Andrea was also the Roundtable’s interpreters at our demonstration booth.

This year’s Rideau Paddlefest was organized by the Smiths Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Rideau Roundtable and the Town of Smiths Falls. TWEED sponsored this year’s event. Door prizes were provided by Joe Cayen (the new owner/manager of Canadian Tire in Smiths Falls) and Ron Brus (Owner of Brew by You in Smiths Falls who donated gift certificates for Parlour Sports Bar). Crime Stoppers provided a wonderful sound system that allowed our announcers [Wendy Alford (Smiths Falls and District Youth Club), Mark Waters (Ottawa McDonalds) and Councillor John Maloney of Smiths Falls] to provide play-by-play commentary on races.

There are many folks to thank for the success of this year’s even…probably too many to mention! Thanks go to: Rick Nelson who piloted our safety boat; Nick Waters provided the team photos for the event; Ken Graham who was our judge and time-keeper; Dianna Garton, a fitness and health promotion student at Algonquin College, who organized the race ladders and administration of the event as part of her placement with the Rideau Roundtable.

We also want to give a shout-out to: Margo Loughren (Smiths Falls Community Centre) who organized the setup, stayed all day and supervised the clean-up of the event…what a job!; Harrold Fizzell, the immediate Past-President of Kinsmen club who provided musical entertainment; the Kinsmen club who also provided the pavilion and healthy eating choices for visitors and participants; and to the Heritage House Museum of Smiths Falls who reduced their admission price for Paddlefest visitors, made fresh bannock (a staple food for voyageurs) for all to try, and who organized a voyageur themed scavenger hunt for kids.

There were many other folks who deserved thanks for making this year a success and while there isn’t room to acknowledge them all individually, we sincerely want to thank them for their support.

We look forward to seeing you all at next year’s event.
