Railway Museum gets requested funding from Smiths Falls council

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario (RMEO), has managed to win the $8,000 shortfall it lobbied council to release. In a letter addressed to council, the RMEO board laid out the ramifications of council’s decision to shave $8,000 from the museum’s community donation ask.

“Though we greatly appreciate the investment of $42,000 in 2016, we would like to remind council that in order for us to reach our goal of self sustainability, we need an investment of $50,000,” wrote Tony Humphrey, president of RMEO board.

The reduced funding would have forced the museum to curb staffing forcing the museum to close one day a week at the height of the season, which would negatively affect the museum’s revenues pushing the goal of sustainability back even further.

“I would like to see RMEO receive the funding they asked for — they presented a fantastic plan, and I think not giving them what they asked for is wrong,” said Dawn Quinn, councillor and chair of the committee.

Most of the councillors agreed that given the ramifications of reduced funding on the museum, it would be a good idea to approve the $8,000 to ensure that the museum can continue its progress towards sustainability.  The question of where to draw money was of concern, but Malcolm Morris. Smiths Falls chief administrative officer, pointed out that there is a community donations reserve fund with $16,000 left over from last year.
