Perth schools raise funds for Fort McMurray

Saturday, May 14, 2016 @ 09:05 PM

By Terry O’Hearn – Perth

Students, teachers, and volunteers crowded the gymnasium at Queen Elizabeth Elementary School in Perth on Thursday, May 12, dancing from 12:15 to 2 p.m. in a fundraising effort on behalf of the fire-ravaged city of Fort McMurray, Alberta. A total of $1,380 was raised, which will go to the “Alberta Fires Appeal” of the Canadian Red Cross.

The event was just one of several local school events for the Fort McMurray cause taking place this week. Perth & District Collegiate Institute announced they were holding a Fort McMurray fundraiser in the cafeteria, also on May 12, between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a cake raffle, while St. John Catholic High School held a dress-down day on Friday, May 13, asking students to contribute $2 to do so. The Stewart School posted on their Facebook page that on Tuesday, May 10: “Some of our students have started a campaign to help support those affected by the Fort McMurray, Alberta fires. Please send donations to school, and students will be collecting them daily.”

Queen Elizabeth teacher Lyndsay Robilliard explained the Dance-A-Thon included all 234 students at the school, split into two groups. The kindergarten to grade 3 group kicked things off at 12:15 p.m. and danced until 12:45, and then grades 4 to grade 6 took over and danced until 2 p.m. For an entry fee of $4, each student received a glow-stick and drink.

Robilliard went on to praise the students, especially the Grade 6 class, who suggested something should be done for the people of Fort McMurray. Originally the proceeds from the event were to go to the Parent Council, but it was mutually agreed that the needs of Fort McMurray would take priority.

A CBC News story dated May 11 stated that “The Canadian Red Cross will soon start providing emergency funds of $600 per adult and $300 per child from the millions raised so far for Fort McMurray residents forced from their homes by the wildfire.” The Red Cross stated that the Fort McMurray incident resulted in the largest domestic appeal in their history. It is reported that more than 700 Red Cross staff and trained volunteers from across Canada are in Alberta to help evacuees.
