High Times at the Heart Institute

Stone Fence Theatre raises money for Almonte General Hospital. The musical comedy was written by Ish Theilheimer, the company’s producer, and directed by Barry’s Bay resident Chantal Elie-Sernoskie. It celebrates Canada’s health care system and takes a humorous look at the subject of aging baby boomers coming to terms with mortality. Proceeds from the play go directly to the hospital. Cost: $25.66 plus tx.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27

Trad Song Session

2:00pm – 4:00pm
The session follows the tradition of people gathering in a local pub to sing and play for their own pleasure. We emphasize simple traditional songs with choruses​ ​so that others can join in​​ – work songs, sea shanties, old gospel tunes and the like – most often unaccompanied​. The stronger singers lead and sing the verses and everyone joins in on the choruses.
To lead a song, you should pretty much know it by heart and the first​ couple of rounds are reserved for those who have prepared a chorus song. In later rounds, if there is time, we will hear the occasional ballad or other solo piece. Most of the songs come from the British Isles and North America but we welcome songs from other traditions as well contemporary classics that follow the traditional idiom.

SRO Big Band Tea Dance

Standing Room Only, Almonte’s own big band, is in its eleventh season. What’s a ‘tea dance’? Tea dances are afternoon dances that were popular in the 20s, 30s, and 40s, when big bands were king. They were generally held in hotels and, of course, always featured a live band. The well known Almonte-based 14-piece big band Standing Room Only (plus vocalist) has recreated the period atmosphere of the tea dance in a series of Sunday afternoon dances in Almonte’s beautiful and historic Old Town Hall. Featuring the vintage big band sounds of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and many others, the series has been a great success. Doors open at 12:45pm. Dress is casual, but optional period dress (1920s-1940s) is encouraged. Cost: $14; $25 couple (cash only).

Selina Martin

Selina Martin and her band will feature songs from her latest CD — the critically acclaimed and Polaris-nominated caruso’s brain. Selina is a delightful performer — magic on the stage. Here are a couple of reviews: “Selina Martin’s new album i’ve been picking caruso’s brain; i think i have the information we need to make a new world is pretty much impossible to categorize. It has obvious elements of prog-rock, pop, and punk, but really all you have to know is that it’s cool as hell and you need to go and listen to it right now. Martin doesn’t sound like anyone else we’re hearing right now, so it’s no wonder she’s been compared to major innovators like Kate Bush and Talking Heads.” (Geyser Music). “If you want to see a show unlike any other, catch a performance from Selina Martin.” (London Free Press). The PepTides, based in Ottawa, give extravagant live performances featuring thick vocal harmonies, theatrical choreography and colourful visuals.
The last time the PepTides took the stage at Almonte’s Old Town Hall was in support of Vinyl Cafe’s 20th Anniversary show. They are returning in support of a new self-titled EP, and will be joined by bluegrass luminaries The Ramblin’ Valley Band. Cost: $17.

Book Launch: Brian Tackaberry

Forgotten Heroes: Mississippi Mills Valour Award Recipients of the Great War is a follow up to the previous book on local individuals who died in WWI. The book is published by the North Lanark Historical Society with financial support from the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. We often hear of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in war, but the lives of those who survived have largely been forgotten as time has passed and their generation has died out. A total of thirty-two individuals from the area make up the “Forgotten Heroes” of Mississippi Mills who received military valour awards for their deeds.
