Youth centre gets funds to provide suicide awareness training to teens

The Smiths Falls & District Centre for Youth was presented with a cheque for $20,000 this week through the Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund.

The money given to the youth centre will be used to deliver safeTALK training to youth aged 15-19 throughout the region.

It will enable 1,500 youths to become suicide-alert helpers who are able to recognize early signs of people with suicidal thoughts. These youth will be equipped to help those in distress find the right support. The agency will also implement mental health first aid awareness campaigns to make two school boards, five communities and 23 schools more aware of and safer from suicide.

The person presenting the check was Sandy McDonald , regional director, community affairs with Bell.
