Tourism: The Rideau Canal

If you’re planning a trip to Sensational Smiths Falls, there’s plenty of events and attractions to keep you busy. However, if anything tops the list of things to see and do, the greatest tourist destination in Smiths Falls is undoubtedly the Rideau Canal. Not only does this historic waterway pass through the town on its way from Ottawa to Kingston, but Smiths Falls is also the home to the Rideau Canal’s national headquarters.
The Rideau Canal National Historic Site of Canada is located on Beckwith Street in a 19th century stone mill. The Visitor Centre is the flagship centre for the historic Rideau Canal system – a National Historic Site of Canada, a designated Canadian Heritage River, and a UNESCO World Heritage destination. Inside, exhibits bring to life the history of the canal – its construction from 1826-1831, its role throughout history, as well as the distinct lifestyle associated with the Rideau Waterway.
It is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, and is a great attraction for you and your family to check out! Alongside its historical significance, the waterway is also an incredibly beautiful sight, and a must-see for all visitors to our beautiful town.
